How to Find an Effective Cellulite Firming Cream

Sunday, November 21, 2010

In July 2004, Good Housekeeping reported a small study of then-available skin-firming or anti-cellulite creams. The Good Housekeeping Institute sent a small group of test subjects to a well-known New York plastic surgeon. The women saw the doctor before starting treatment, after two weeks and after four weeks.

They were instructed to use one of three cellulite creams daily on one thigh only, providing a very reliable control for comparison. For example, if a woman gained or lost ten pounds during the study, the study would still reveal if the cream alone had any effect.

At each appointment, thighs were measured at three points above the knee, photos were taken and dimply skin was graded on a scale from "very noticeable" to "none at all". Unfortunately, GHI did not reveal the names of the two losing creams; but they did report that only Avon's Cellu-Sculpt significantly reduced the treated thighs' circumference. The average loss - after just one month - was ? of an inch. The point is - cellulite firming creams, at least the effective ones, really can have an effect.

Fast forward two years ...

Avon Cellu-Sculpt still has the same great ingredients and is still one of the most popular firming creams on the market. The key active ingredients are: caffeine and cornstarch for temporary tightening; glycerine and glycosaminoglycans as moisturizers and, most importantly, Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3 which stimulates growth of new elastin and collagen.

In the meantime, the search for cosmetically active polypeptides has progressed by leaps and bounds. With the introduction of tetrapeptides, we finally have an ingredient that addresses sagging, loose skin known as cellulite.

Palmitoyl Tetrapeptide-3 has been clinically shown to stop and even reverse glycation damage which causes skin to droop. Glycation is the process by which glucose links with proteins and causes them to bind together, thus stiffening tissues.

Glycation affects the skin's support system - collagen, elastin and other proteins - and leads to wrinkles, sagging, uneven skin tone and loss of youthful contours.

Finally, in a class by themselves, are the neuropeptides. Neuropeptides are polypeptides that act as neuromodulators, neurotransmitters, neurohormones, and hormones. Probably the best-known proponent for the cosmetic use of neuropeptides is Dr. Nicholas Perricone. His previous anti-aging developments have met with broad acclaim and his three books have been on the New York Times Bestseller list.

Dr. Perricone explains his work with neuropeptides in his third book The Perricone Promise thus: "In The Wrinkle Cure and The Perricone Prescription, I introduced a major theme of my research: the Inflammation-Disease-Aging Connection. Because inflammation is a great contributor to accelerated aging, it has been an important focus of my ongoing scientific research. And we now know that neuropeptides and peptides play an important role in mediating inflammation."

According to Dr. Perricone, neuropeptides provide the benefits of the above polypeptides as well as provide powerful anti-inflammatory (i.e. anti-aging) activity and maximum hydration to the skin.

We surveyed the market for cellulite creams that contain some or all of the ingredients you want for maximum firming. Then we ranked them for their firming effectiveness. The ideal firming cream would contain ingredient(s) from each category below.

Key Ingredients to Look For in a Cellulite Firming Cream

A. For Temporary Skin Tightening

Though the skin tightening effect is what most people are looking for in a firming cream, the effect is regrettably temporary. It's literally like putting starch on fabric; and many of the temporary tighteners are starches. Look for cornstarch, hydrolyzed soy flour, hydrolyzed wheat protein, etc..

Starch is a natural polymer or combination of many sugar monomers. Working in similar fashion to natural starches are synthesized polymers. These include acrylates, acrylate crosspolymers and lauryl methacrylate.

Astringents are another class of temporary skin tightener. They work by removing oils and soap residue from the skin, leaving the skin smoother and tenser. Examples are alcohol, propylene glycol, witch hazel, and salicylic acid. Astringents are generally drying. If you already have dry skin, you may want to avoid firming lotions that contain them.

Anti-edema ingredients are yet another type of temporary skin tightener. They tighten the skin by reducing abnormal swelling and inflammation within the cells. Examples are aminophylline, caffeine, chamomile, centella, grapefruit, ivy, laminaria (seaweed) and rosemary.

B. Both Temporary and Restorative

Probably the most popular, but also most under-rated, skin care ingredients are good moisturizers. Many people don't realize that the benefits are not just temporary. Keeping the skin well-hydrated not only feels good temporarily but also supports the skin's matrix against collapsing with the passage of the years.

Recent studies suggest that skin moisturizers also accelerate the recovery of irritated or injured skin. The skin is the body's largest organ and its first line of defense. The skin acts as a physical barrier against infection and injury. In a study from the Department of Dermatology, University Hospital, Uppsala, Sweden, a moisturizing cream was tested for its effect on damaged skin with excellent results, including far less water loss and enhanced barrier recovery.

Better, more effective moisturizers are developed every year. Current top picks are: hyaluronic acid and other glycosaminoglycans; and imidazolidinyl or diazolidinyl urea. Other excellent moisturizers are collagen, elastin, glycerin, glycogen, glucose, polysaccharides, amino acids, cholesterol, lipids, ceramides and lecithin.

The above are all Natural Moisturizing Factors or NMF's. For maximum benefit, NMF's need to be combined with emollients such as silicone, lanolin and other animal oils, mineral and plant oils (shea butter, cocoa butter, petrolatum), cyclomethicone, cholesterol, stearates, mystirates, palmitates or triglycerides.

C. Turn-Back-the-Clock Restorative: The Polypeptides

Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-3 (PP-3), Palmitoyl Tetra- (or variously Tera-) peptide-3 (PT-3), and Neuropeptides are truly active anti-aging ingredients. PP-3 stimulates the growth of new collagen and elastin to plump out wrinkles and dimpled skin from within. PT-3 stops and reverses glycation damage, thereby lifting the skin and refining body contours. Neuropeptides have been developed that do the work of PP-3 and PT-3 combined, as well as hydrate and fight inflammation that accelerates the skin's aging.

How To Decide On A Natural Gas Grill Or Charcoal Grill

The question is do you use a Natural Gas Grill or a Charcoal Grill for your next barbeque. The great American Barbecue is a wonderful way to bring family and friends together on a pleasant sunny afternoon for good eats and good company. Just for fun, there are six ways to spell BBQ in the English Language; all six have been used here–see if you can spot them all and how many times we used them.

As you know there are BBQ purists that think sizzling up a few steaks on a grill is not real unless it is done on a charcoal grill. Then there are those that feel their sizzled steaks or burgers are just as good if not better on a red hot Natural Gas grill. Over the years there have been many heated debates about which grill is better, Natural Gas or charcoal. Some of the differences affect the length of cooking time, taste of the food being cooked and how to clean up the mess afterward. The bottom line is that the differences between the grills are safety, flavor, cost and convenience. Here we will concentrate on Charcoal and Natural Gas grills. If you want to learn more about Smoker grills go to Natural-Gasgrill.com.

The number one and biggest difference between a Charcoal and a Natural Gas Barbeque Grill is a biggie, and that is the cost. The Charcoal Grill will be your most inexpensive grill by far. You can purchase one of these grills for as little as thirty dollars if you look to a small Hibachi type model, which is perfect for someone with no backyard or very limited space. Of course, with all consumer goods, charcoal grills can be found upwards of $400.00 but that is for the very serious aficionado of charcoal grilling. A middle ground price for a Charcoal Grill will run about $75.00-$125.00 and are considered a good quality for the money with lasting ability.

Now Natural Gas barbecues are another whole ball of wax. You can spend upwards of $14,000.00 on an ~all the bells and whistles~ Natural Gas grill. No, that is not the norm. From your Home Improvement store you can find a very functional Natural Gas Grill for about three hundred dollars that will last for some time. This will depend on how it is treated. If it is out in the elements get a cover, if you live in a very humid area, rust will eventually get it so you may want to spend a little more money more to combat that factor. The cost of Natural Gas Bar-BQ grills will go up with each feature added. Natural Gas Grills come with huge grates sizes, four or five burners, side tables and/or burners, warmer ovens, even small refrigerators. The more down to earth models which can be very good quality will range from $400.00 to $1,500.00. These will have some of the better features like side burners but certainly not a refrigerator. According to the care you provide they can last from 12 to 15 years.

The next issue to address is the size of the grill you will need for your cooking efforts. If you are only using it for small parties or for the family on weekends, you don’t have to go all out and buy a grill that will Bar-B-Que twenty pounds of meat and potatoes at one time. It is possible to find a good grill to fit your grilling style at a very good price.

Convenience, for some is the most important aspect of the entire grilling world. And, for the ultimate in convenience, the Natural Gas Grill tops the Charcoal Grill by far. Natural Gas Grills have push button starters for an instant fire (you still have to heat it up). You can grill for much longer periods of times without having to replenish the fuel. The ability to raise and lower the heat gives you the option of controlling the temperature of the foods being grilled. You will never have to worry about the wind since the heating comes from below and they heat more evenly over the surface grates. Clean up is virtually a snap since it only requires you to heat the grates and scrape with a wire brush. The one disadvantage is if you run out of gas. If you do not have an extra tank your grill will cool quickly and the Bar-BQ will be a disaster.

These are things you should think about when deciding which BBQ you will purchase. With all of the conveniences mentioned above for Natural Gas Grills. Charcoal grills have a few deficits. It will take at least 30 minutes to heat the charcoal to the required temperature. The ash residue left by the charcoal will have to be cleaned out and thrown away. You do not have the option of burning off the leftover bits of meat left on the grate so you will have to clean it yourself with a bit of good old fashion elbow grease. And because you do not have the ability to regulate the temperature, you will have to rotate the food to find hot spots and then to cold spots for proper and thorough cooking.

For some, this little bit of extra work is acceptable in order to get that genuine Barbeque flavor for their steaks on a grill, burgers or ribs that they swear Natural Gas Grills don’t provide. Charcoal Grills simply do not have the ease of Natural Gas Grills when cooking a Bar-B-Que, but for serious BBQ artists it’s the ritual that counts. When you are thinking of buying a new Barbecue, think of how you want to do your cookouts. If you love to come home from work and throw something on the ~Barbie~, for a quick meal then Natural Gas Grill is the grill for you. However, if you only Bar-BQ on the weekends and you love the procedures of the real cookout experience buy a quality Charcoal Grill. There is really nothing about Charcoal Grills that is more convenient than with Natural Gas grills, but convenience is not everything and many people argue that the ritual associated with charcoal grills is simply part of having a Barbeque.

The last thing to consider and this is a big one, is safety. There are many schools of thoughts on this aspect. Some say that more accidents happen with Charcoal Grills but more serious accidents happen with Natural Gas Grills. Consider these factors and use them in your judgment as to whether you will buy a Natural Gas Grill or a Charcoal Grill. Charcoal Grills being so much lighter then the Gas Grills it is easier to tip them over. Using starter fluid is always dangerous and this is where most injuries occur with Charcoal Grills. Never, ever use starter fluid on the charcoal after the coals have been lit, you risk burning yourself and your food will taste like starter fluid and not barbeque. There is a greater risk of a flare up with charcoal but that by no means says it will not happen with Natural Gas Grills. Common sense tells you that you should keep both of them away from structures that can ignite. For the greatest safety when using a Charcoal Grill verses a Natural Gas Grill is to buy pre-soaked briquettes which need no starter fluid at all.

With a Natural Gas Grill you will not have to use starter fluid but you must be very attentive to the manufactures instructions. Little things like leaving the gas on too long before you hit the ignition button could be very dangerous. Heed the manufactures requirements for maintenance especially for hoses and the gas container, for leaks.

Safety is the utmost priority when it comes to all grills. Don’t drink and barbecue, wait until after the cooking to imbibe. Watch the children when the grills are lit, keep them far way from the hot grills. By just using a little common sense you should prevent all accidents from happening whether you have a Natural Gas Grill or a Charcoal Grill.

Last but not least, is the forever debate about flavor and this should be one of your considerations when buying a grill. Many BBQ chefs swear by the smoky flavor of the Charcoal Grill when cooking their steaks on a grill and would cook on none other. But on the other side of the coin many gas grillers say that there is no difference. There is a little truth in both of their statements. There was a blind study done where people where asked to taste two hamburgers, one from the Natural Gas Grill and one from the Charcoal Grill. None of them tasted a difference in the hamburgers but when it came to steaks on a grill, the juicy, smoky flavor from the Charcoal Grill won every time. To combat this, some manufactures of Natural Gas Grills have added flavor bars made out of ceramic to give the meat a more genuine BBQ flavor. The theory is that the bars catch the fat dripping from the meat and vaporizes it giving off a more smoky taste.

All of this information will by no means end the debate. If you can, buy a Natural Gas Grill and a Charcoal Grill giving you both options for your Bar-B-Que. If you purchase a small Charcoal Grill it will be portable to take on vacations or to a neighbor’s house for overflow cooking. Whether you buy a Natural Gas Grill or a Charcoal Grill we wish you a happy Bar-BQ in your backyard or on your next picnic. Injectable Fillers, the Downside

Restylane, Alloderm, collagen, fat, Sculptra... the choices in injectable facial fillers seem endless. What's more, new products become available all the time, each one promising to do more, last longer, and produce fewer side effects. And with average treatment costs in the several-hundred-dollar range, injectable fillers are increasingly popular with women from all walks of life, from soccer moms to fashion models. But, just how effective are fillers? Are the results worth it? And what potential problems do you need to watch out for?

Understanding the Beast
Fillers are substances injected under the skin to fill in lines, plump up skin, and remove wrinkles. Some fillers contain natural ingredients - including your own fat harvested from somewhere else on your body. Some fillers are made of synthetic ingredients. And others are a combination of natural substances derived from animals combined with synthetic ingredients.

Typically, fillers are injected in the doctor's office, as out-patient procedures that allow you to return to work and regular activities immediately after the appointment. The results are generally immediate, and the appointment usually takes less than an hour. There is often some slight discomfort or itching after the procedure, but that should clear up within a day or two. While some bruising may occur, side effects are rare and generally mild. So what's the catch?

Thanks Ma'am, We'll See You in Six Weeks
As with Botox (an injectable, but not a filler), one of the biggest downsides is that fillers are temporary. Sad to say, but the easier and safer the injectable, the more temporary it seems to be. You can even use your own fat as a filler, but the results will probably fade within weeks. There is no risk of allergic reaction with this procedure, because the filler is harvested from your own body, but chances are you'll be back at your doctor's in practically no time at all - although a small number of patients have reported terrific results that have lasted for up to a year.

Collagen is an older filler (which, for this hypochondriac, means that it may be "safer" and "better tested") that has a relatively short life span. In fact, some women arrange to have new injections every six weeks - and many report that it's their favorite. Restylane is perhaps the most popular filler around - and also reported to be the most painful.

Fillers containing hyaluronic acid usually last much longer; Juvederm is one such brand, and is touted to last up to one year, although there is talk that it doesn't live up to its claims. ArteFill is another "permanent" filler, while the makers of Radiesse and Sculptra claim semi-permanence. Of course, the longer-lasting the filler is, the more possibility there is for side effects or botched treatments that cannot be remedied. This may be an especially difficult problem in the case of Artefill, because it contains bovine collagen, an ingredient with a fairly high rate of allergic reactions.

Watch Out for This One!
Liquid silicone (Silikon 1000) has also been known to be used as an injectable filler despite the fact that it is not sold for this purpose. Because it is permanent, it has advantages. However, known complications with liquid silicone include migration and lumpiness that can develop years after treatment. There have even been reports of silicone finding its way into blood vessels and forming a clot! It's so risky, in fact, it's been likened to injecting a time bomb - or, the Russian roulette of cosmetic dermatology and plastic surgery.

So since Silikon 1000 is approved for use in one part of the body, certain loopholes in FDA regulations allow docs to use it off-label as an injectable filler. But because of the dangers associated with silicone injections into the face and lips, the FDA has banned doctors from advertising it. What's more, there have been so many lawsuits related to this use of silicone that many plastic surgery medical malpractice insurance contracts now carry a clause that prohibits doctors from using it and refuse liability coverage for complications resulting from silicone injections.

Risks Include...
One widely recognized problem is that the longer-lasting fillers can also cause lumps to form under your skin at the site of the injection. Sometimes the lumps are visible. And, even when they're not, they can be felt. Who wants to be kissed by lumpy lips? Artecol and Dermalive are two brand names that have been frequently associated with this problem. And yet, to be fair, it can happen with any of them.

The official statement from the American Society of Plastic Surgeons is that the risks involved with injectable fillers include: allergies, infection, abscesses, open sores, skin peeling, scarring and lumpiness. They neglect to mention the horrible side effect mentioned by one medical study -- necrosis. That's dead tissue. Call me squeamish, but the thought of my lips turning into dead flesh is pretty scary. I realize that every medical procedure contains inherent risks. But I wonder: is the potential gain worth the risks that come along with injectable fillers?

Woman Overboard-Your Greatest Enemy May be You
Take it from a woman who over-plucked her eyebrows when she was fifteen-and they never grew back: making changes to your appearance can be intoxicating. I was so entranced by how large my eyes looked that I kept on going. The same thing can happen with facial fillers. Too much of a good thing is - too much. No one wants plastic fish lips - but it's easy to see how a little filler can turn into more next time, and then a longer-lasting one, and one more time, and suddenly you've gone too far.

One way to ease into the world of fillers is to ask your doctor to try a temporary injectable like collagen the first few times. This will give you an idea of what a longer-lasting product like Juvederm will do for you. And that way, you can live with a filler for awhile before you commit to the new look.
This brings me to a final issue related to injectable fillers. Is it just me, or are we in the midst of a trend toward unnaturally shaped, very large lips? I've reviewed about six dozen plastic surgeons' before and after photos of "lip enhancements" on the Internet, and I have to say: at least half of them looked quite unnatural and unattractive to me. So bad, in fact, that the "before" photos often looked better.

What's up with this? I haven't notice plastic surgeons posting photos of nose jobs that look worse than what the patient had to begin with. Or breast implants gone wrong. Why all these oddly shaped lips and over-plumped creases? While the information highway appears to be in full bloom, the web, in many ways, has made it all the more difficult to find a qualified practioner. My advice: stay away from strip malls and nail salons that offer injectable treatments, and read our Beginner's Guide to Choosing a Surgeon.

Striving for Perfection
Perfection is the name of the game in plastic surgery. Doctors are trying to provide us with the perfect facial fillers, and the rest of us are crossing our fingers and hoping for that perfect, smooth, wrinkle-free skin. It looks to me like injectable fillers do not yet live up to the hype. But with new products coming out every day, the perfect filler might be just around the corner.

Thankfully, an Organized Thanksgiving

Outside the weather is cooling down and the days are glorious. Inside, however,
Cindy feels anything but glorious. The countdown is 3 days before Thanksgiving
and Mike's parents are flying into town tomorrow to spend the holiday with them.
As she looks around her house, she sighs, not knowing where to start. "How about a
cleaning service?", she thinks to herself. But when she finally gets around to calling,
she finds out they are all booked through the holidays. She is on her own and that
feeling of being overwhelmed takes over once again.

While Cindy is busy cleaning the bathrooms, 3-year old Megan gets a hold of a
permanent marker and decides to color herself. By the time Cindy gets her cleaned
up, Nicole is home from school and Zachary is up from his nap. So much for
cleaning the house.....

Today, Mike's parents fly in from out of town. Cindy hasn't cleaned the house or
made the Thanksgiving menu. In fact, she hasn't even figured out what she is
going to make for dinner. While Mike is at the airport, she runs out to the grocery
store with Megan & Zachary in tow. Relying on her memory, she starts throwing
things in her cart. Cindy leaves with a nagging feeling that she is forgetting
something, but she can't figure out what.

Thanksgiving day has arrived. Cindy is up early to start preparing the meal. She
opens the fridge to find her turkey still frozen solid. She had no idea it took 4 DAYS
to thaw the turkey in the fridge! Thank goodness she bought the oven bags for the
turkey. Or did she? As Cindy starts looking for the bags, she realizes that is what
she forgot. She sends Mike out to the store to get oven bags only to realize that the
stores are closed. The remainder of the day continues in much the same fashion-
one catastrophe after the next. Exhausted, Cindy heads to bed anxious to hit the
day after Thanksgiving sales with her mother-in-law in the morning.

The Friday shopping spree turned out to be less than she had hoped for. Busy
traffic, long lines and the fact that she couldn't remember the sizes she needed or
who she needed to shop for didn't exactly add to the experience. Cindy heads home
at the end of the day ready for the holidays to be over.

Tracy is on the back patio with the kids enjoying the fall weather. They are
making Thanksgiving cards and napkin rings for Thanksgiving day. It is a tradition
the kids look forward to doing together every year. The entire family is looking
forward to Kevin's parents' visit next week.

A few days before her in-laws arrive, Tracy pulls up her Thanksgiving menu on
the computer and prints out her list. After cleaning out her refrigerator to make
room for the turkey, she heads to the grocery store. When she returns from the
store and puts the turkey in the fridge to thaw, she puts Alex down for his nap, and
begins some of the holiday food preparations with Brandon. The house cleaning
service will be there tomorrow, so she just needs to prepare a few food items ahead
of time and she will be ready to go. While the dishes are baking, she unpacks her
Thanksgiving centerpiece and irons the linens. By the time Brook gets home from
school, Alex is up from his nap and Cindy is able to read for a few moments with
the kids because she is prepared for her company.

Thanksgiving morning, Brook and Brandon are beaming with pride as they help
set the table and place their cards and napkin rings on the table. Tracy and her
mother -in-law stuff the turkey and heat up the frozen side dishes while the turkey
cooks. Because so much has been done ahead of time, she still has things to do, but
isn't running around like a turkey with her head cut off.

The meal turns out delicious and everyone has a chance to share what they are
thankful for. After the meal, Mike and his dad take the kids for a "turkey trot" (a
little jog) and on a short scavenger hunt while Tracy and her mother-in-law clean
up the dishes. The day is concluded with pie, family games and a movie. After the
kids go to bed, Tracy and her mother-in-law plan out their shopping for the day
after Thanksgiving sales.

Prepared for a shopping adventure, the ladies head out at dawn the next day.
The stores were crowded but they stayed focused, were able to get some great deals
and managed to make it home by noon. After lunch, the family celebrates another
tradition of decorating the house for Christmas.

Thanksgiving Tips

? Start a tradition where each member of the family shares one thing they are
thankful for during meal times in the month of November.

? If you plan to have your house professionally cleaned before Thanksgiving, book
your appointments now to ensure you get it done when you need it.

? Use up as much of the food in your refrigerator as possible before shopping for
Thanksgiving.

? Prepare side dishes and pies ahead of time and freeze. Do the same with a few
extra meals so you don't have to spend time cooking during your time with out of
town guests.

? If you are traveling for Thanksgiving, keep in mind that the day before
Thanksgiving is the busiest travel day of the year. Leave a few days before
Thanksgiving and come home several days after if at all possible.

? If you are making Thanksgiving dinner, make a menu for the day on the computer.
Type up the recipes you will be using, then use the cut and paste feature on your
computer to create the grocery list. Label a computer folder "holiday planning",
place it in the folder and use it year after year.

? If you are hosting Thanksgiving dinner, consider delegating. Have each family or
person bring one or two dishes for the meal.

? Many grocery stores sell ready made holiday meals. If you are terribly busy, this
may be a good option for you.

? Buy some disposable containers before Thanksgiving. Pack up a little "to go" pack
for everyone to share the leftovers.

? Frozen turkeys take 3-4 days to thaw in the refrigerator. Don't forget to take your
turkey out of the freezer in time or you may be eating Thanksgiving dinner on
Friday instead of Thursday.

? Get your kids involved by taking the time to make a Thanksgiving craft together. I
guarantee it will make them proud to set these out on Thanksgiving day. One year I
painted my children's hands brown and each finger a different color. We made hand
print turkey cards for each extended family member who was coming to dinner.
Inside we wrote what we were thankful for about that person. It was a huge hit for
the guests and the kids! Check out www.familyfun.com or
www.perpetualpreschool.com for more ideas.

? Buy a few candles and have them burning around the house (out of reach of
children, of course!). Part of holiday memories include smell. Think pumpkin!

? Take inventory of the dishes, tables, tablecloths and chairs you have available.
Consider borrowing from a friend or neighbor instead of buying, especially if stor-
age space is limited.

? Wash & iron linens a few days prior to Thanksgiving.

? Consider inviting a single friend or neighbor to join your family meal.

? Have some toys, games or activities for the children to do after dinner so the
adults can have a conversation.

? Keep a small notebook of your budget for holiday shopping. Keep track of sizes
and how much you have spent on each person in the notebook and have it in your
purse during the months of November and December.

? Book a babysitter in advance for shopping the day after Thanksgiving.

Science Fiction Writing - Ten Cliches to Avoid

Science Fiction has become so much part of our culture that icons from it are all around us, in film, TV, computer games and music. Adoption into the mainstream makes science fiction both easy to sell, and hard to write without seeming tired and cliched. Here are ten situations you should steer away from, and some variations to consider if you're determined to proceed.

The Never-Ending Spacecraft Flying Overhead

It starts with just a small piece of hardware coming into view. Then it expands as the ship fills the whole screen, gun ports bristling. Still it comes, sound building all the time, until the tail engines, glowing yellow, pass overhead. Star Wars started this one, and it's been used ad-nauseam ever since, giving the model makers a chance to show off. Try a new approach. Why not have the spaceship roll overhead then pan back to find its only inches long? Or how about an alien that can travel through space without a ship?

Saucers Over the White House

The silver saucer hovers overhead while various military types run around saying things like "Now we know we are not alone." and "Hit them with everything you've got." The aliens say things like "Klaatu Barada Nicto." This approach was overdone in the 1950's in Earth vs The Flying Saucers and The Day The Earth Stood Still long before Independence Day came along. The aliens always speak English, supposedly having watched our TV. If that were the case, why aren't they already brain dead? Just for a change, how about having the aliens ignore the major powers altogether? After all, are they really stupid enough to attack the strongest military powers first?

The Multi-Race Bar Room

The barman says "We don't serve your kind in here" There's an evil looking being standing in the corner and a silly- looking alien singing a silly sounding song. Writers love this situation. It gives them a chance to come up with outlandish aliens with equally outlandish names. There are fine examples in Star Wars, and any episode of Babylon 5. If you want to subvert this cliche, how about having an alien town with segregated bars, or even segregated areas inside bars, thus creating plenty of opportunities for tension?

The Meeting of the Galactic Council

Groups of different aliens shout at each other a lot, saying things like "I withdraw my voting block" and "We do not recognize this council" By far the most boring example is in The Phantom Menace, which tried to substitute spectacle for tension and failed abysmally. at least Babylon 5 showed imagination and a modicum of originality, and in Star Trek you can always rely on the Klingons to do something violent.

The meeting is often little more than a chance for the writer to play with metaphors for contemporary politics. And if they're not doing that, they're rehashing King Arthur And The Round Table. Thee is a whole genre of books devoted to galactic councils, empires and federations. If you're going to try it, it's best not to have a recognizable antecedent. Never use thinly disguised Roman Senates or British Style upper and lower houses ... and definitely no round tables. Find a new way of having an intergalactic empire make decisions. Then you'll be getting somewhere.

The Computer That Blows Up trying to Solve a Paradox

The square jawed hero first says to the computer "Everything I tell you is a lie." and then he says "I am a liar" The lights flash, drives whir, and smoke pours from the computer before it blows up. The people are freed and everybody lives happily ever after. The best example of this was in the original star trek series. Of course, anyone who knows anything about computers knows that this never happens. If you ask computers questions they can't answer, they just sulk for a while. Smoke only comes out of them if you pour coffee into the drive in frustration. For something new, how about if the computer sets the paradox? How would your hero handle it?

The Guy Left to Watch the Smoking Crater

A spaceship crashes in a remote township, and there's only one old guy there to watch as it splits open and the aliens start their carnage. This was best done in the 1950's, especially in The Blob and War of The Worlds, but it still turns up from time to time in remakes or with slight variations, as in Stephen King's Creepshow, or the same author's The Tommyknockers.

And then there's the whole alien crash scenario, which has launched a sub-genre of its own in Roswell, Dark Skies, innumerable books and, of course, The X Files. Yo need a new angle if you're going to crash land aliens. How about having the ship hit in a city centre? Or, turn it around and imagine the impact on an alien community of a ship from Earth crashing on their planet/

The Last Minute Rescue

Just as the world is about to be pounded into submission somebody says, "Wait a minute. Why don't we try making them sick?" Whatever rescue method they come up with, t always works. Famous examples include The Day of the Triffids and Independence Day. Maybe you could try having the aliens winning for a change. Depressing I know, but it hasn't been done too often.

Time Travel Paradoxes

Somebody says "The same atoms cannot co-exist in the same space and time" Somebody else says "What happens if I go back and kill Hitler?" You'll recognize this from Back To The Future, Timecop and Seven Days, but it was being worked out in print a long time ago. Robert Heinlein wrote the classic By His Bootstraps which defined the prototype for this scenario. How about turning things around and having the traveller send his younger self back to the future... what happens next?

The Ray Gun Shoot Out

There are a lot of blue and white flashes, lots of debris blowing up in spectacular fashion, and somebody says "You do not shoot that green s**t at me" This one goes as far back as Flash Gordon, and continues in the Star Trek universe, Stargate and Farscape. Most of the time it's cowboys in space, and readers recognized it as such in print a long time ago. Try to find another means of resolving conflict. Just don't go for slo-mo martial arts instead .. The Matrix trilogy did all that needed to be done there.

The All Powerful Computer

Somebody asks "Is there a god?" and the computer says "There is now" Paranoia used to be about aliens taking over people, but more recently fear of technology has been growing, as witnessed in The Terminator and The Matrix. Again, this idea is much older in print, most notably in Asimov's Robot stories. Maybe it's time for the benevolent computer or for a future where computers become redundant and are replace by something much stranger?

Conclusion

If you've seen an idea used before, then an editor will have seen it too. Remember, editors are also fans and, in the case of science fiction editors, sometimes fanatics. They are likely to be more widely read than you and have seen more films than you. They've seen all the cliches so many times that they're sick of them.

Cliches were once original ideas, and only became cliches because they worked so well at one time. All you have to do is take a cliche and twist it into something nobodies ever done before.

Good luck.

Wearing Purple, Fashion Tips

Monday, November 8, 2010

When you get bored of all the options that you have in your wardrobe and want to add some interesting yet smart options to it, purple may be a color worth considering. Even though the first thought that may come to your mind while reading this is that the author is out of his mind, read on and think again. Many people are choosing to adopt the unconventional purple because it makes an elegant and strong fashion statement.

The trick, however, is in the manner you choose the other accessories and how you combine your purple with other colors depending on the shade of purple you decide to wear. Other bright colors are a big no-no with purple. Pinks, oranges and red are color which you should not even give a single glance to while deciding to wear something purple.

If you are in the mood to wear a bright shade of purple, then you should consider dark accessories or a black coat to go along. A black skirt / trouser with a light purple top will make you look like royalty. Dark purple, on the other hand, should be teamed with light neutral colors like beige, cream and off-white. If you don't want to be ousted by your friends and colleagues in a social gathering couple purple only with blacks, brown, cream, beige, white or on the outside a tan color. At no cost should you include any other colors.

If you are not confident about being able to decide the right color mix and are not positive that you can carry off a purple dress but still want to flirt with the color, you could try adding a hint of purple to your attire by using purple accessories. These could be in the form of buttons, earrings, scarves or pins.

But this piece of advice does not mean that you venture out and wear purple socks or shoes to match your purple shirt. It will smack of being cheap and flashy. Avoid purple shoes and any kind of purple dresses which are the same color from top to bottom. Too much of purple makes you look exactly the opposite of what you want to appear as. Purple should be used selectively with a certain angle to give a hint of nattiness without seeming to be flashy.

The color purple is beautiful and men and women alike should use it. But still, judicious use of the color is essential to get the desires result.

Black Is Still In For the Winter Of 2006

Black is back and bigger than ever and are appearing a darker and more elegant versions of the spring and summer fashion styles. Thicker fabrics abound with wool replacing gauze and sleeveless fashions becoming full blouses.

Denim is still as popular as ever and available in an infinite number of styles and sizes and there are many other styles brand new for this year.

Black has been brought back by designers renewing the statement that black remains chic and calling for tall boots with no showing of skin in freezing weather. Black is being seen in many fashions this fall from dresses to handbags and other accessories. The New Black offers much more choices in fabrics and styling to escape the basic black of the past.

Mix and match different fashion trends to personalize your look and add jewelry, color, and layering to create your own style.

For colors, the azures and turquoise pastels have evolved to deep teals and deep browns and rusts with burnt orange and ginger accents are must haves along with other nature colors.

A trend has begun back to the romantic era with lots of sheer blouses combined with lace, ribbon and large puffy sleeves in black, white and prints, looking perfect under fitted velvet jackets.

Full skirts have a completely new look this season combined with a fitted jacket and tall boots for a sexy romantic look.

Remember this fashion hint; combine a full item with something slim so that you don't look sloppy.

The sexy, tall knee high boots are back this fall and are the footwear of choice with everything from skirts to gauchos. Flat heels are in this season as well.

Big oversized bags are very popular this year and are another must have for this fall season. There are many luggage sized bags, but the best is just a bit larger than normal.
Especially hot are large bags with flashy materials such as gold lame'.

Some other must haves this season are big ethnic jewelry and bold cuff bracelets, cropped pants, and military style jackets and coats as well as animal prints and fur trims.

The Latest Hairstyle Fashion and Beauty Trends of the Stars of the Red Carpet

As Jonathon of the hit new series Blowout says your hair will make you or break you. No where is this more true then on the red carpet. Sport a great dress or outfit and hair and you will be on the cover of nearly every magazine. Sport a bad hairstyle and be on People?s magazine list of worst dressed and red carpet tragedies. This is why most celebrities have celebrity hairstylists and pay thousands for a cut and style. Some even fly their stylist with them everywhere they go as part of their entourage.

A great hairstyle and beauty treatment has become as important, if not more so than the elegant and very expensive designer dresses and outfits. The question is what are the current hot hairstyle and beauty trends being sported on the red carpet? Some are old time favorites, and others are quite surprising.

The summer classic up-do is a hot item as it shows off sexy necks and jewelry (like necklaces and earrings) well. Demi Moore wore it well in the hit movie An officer and a Gentleman. Gweneth Paltrow and Cameron Diaz are almost always seen with this hairstyle. It is classy and elegant when done right. It works best with normal, medium length hair and light makeup and jewelry. Heavy, big jewelry is out, sheek, pure elegance and beauty are in with this style.

The shaggy and layered hairstyle. According to Allure magazine, this is the one hairstyle and fashion trend that can make anyone look good and it will work on just about everyone, regardless of face shape. Basically this hairstyle will add volume to your hair and creates a frame for your face. Heidi Klum wore it well during an episode of her hit show Runway. Several stars like Drew Barrymore and Kate Winslet have been seen sporting this do. This is yet another low makeup and easy maintenance hairstyle. Simplicity is key here so light jewelry works best. A simple leather strap necklace and pendant will work wonders. This hairstyle has been also referred to as sexy bed head, or the after sex do.

Long, sexy waves. Perms are out, but the secret fashion trend in the hottest salons is salt spraying. Don?t wash the hair everyday as dirty hair is easier to manage. Get the hair damp and use salt water in a spray to bring out the wavy curls. According to the salons, everyone?s hair has some natural waves and patterns and this will bring this out and magnify it. Don?t think its hot, just look at the sexiest vixens of the red carpet like Jessica Alba and Shakira. They wear this style very well. Again, simplicity is key, no heavy makeup and light jewelry work best. Again a simple black or brown leather strap necklace with a simple locket or amulet adds mystery and will make it that much hotter. So skip the perm and first try spritzing sea salt on damp hair, scrunching hair & letting air dry. Since most hair has some sort of natural wave, the sea salt will bring it out.

The bullet. This is the latest fashion trend transformed offspring of the 80?s mullet and fullet with a dominant and forceful business touch. It?s the short female business do and is popular with very dominant women. It?s a short hairstyle that shows the world you are a female and are in control. You will find it on Hillary Clinton, Laura Bush, Ellen Degeneres, and Rosie O?Donnell. It is believed to have been first worn by Prince back in the early 80?s on his Purple Rain tour.

These hairstyles fashion trends are all easy do?s and don?t require heavy makeup or jewelry. Simplicity is key and heavy or big gaudy jewelry is out. A simple leather strap on a sexy, thin neck like Jessica Alba is all that is needed with these fashion trends. These hairstyles and fashion trends will remain big for the rest of 2006 and into 2007.

Why Are Leather Handbags So Popular Today?

Sunday, October 24, 2010

What is it about leather handbags that make them so intriguing? They come in a wide variety of sizes, colors, and styles. Maybe it is the butter soft material they are made from. There is also a fashion status attached to a good leather handbag. Many famous fashion conscious women carry them, making them even more popular. A nice bag that completes an outfit can give someone a little extra confidence as they go about their day.

Leather in its most basic form is made from the hide of an animal. First they are cleaned to remove the hair and any other debris. These hides are stretched and tanned through the use of a chemical process. During this time, depending on the process and chemicals used the type of leather produced is determined. It can be from very soft leather to suede to hard stiff leather depending on how it is treated.

Fashion designers use this leather to make many products, not just handbags. There are also shoes, belts, and hats. So an entire ensemble can be achieved. No one wants to have the wrong shoes with the right bag. Leather is a very durable material that can withstand the every day use, wear, and tear the average person can put on it. It is one of the reasons leather is such a popular material to use in clothing. There are still many vintage leather handbags out there, and rarely do they go out of style.

Leather goods are made to last a lifetime. But you have to take care of them. The best way is to keep them clean and supple with the use of a good leather cleaner. Leather cleaners can smell bad so if you are planning to use your bag on the weekend it would be better to clean it earlier in the week. Before cleaning your bag with any product it is always recommended to test it on an area that won't be seen.

Just in case the cleaner is too harsh and changes the color or texture of the leather. Usually after a good cleaning your handbag will look brand new. There are many animal rights groups that are trying to ban or just discourage people from the use of leather in fashion. Some of these groups are very aggressive and will try to destroy animal goods by throwing paint on them. Or just make the owner feel immense guilt over the use of leather.

What these groups are fighting against is an age old tradition. The earliest man made his clothing from the hides of the animals he killed. In most cases these animals are not killed just for the hide, the whole animal is used for a variety of purposes. Most importantly they are used for food.
