The Classic Chanel Quilted Handbag

Thursday, September 30, 2010

Ooh la la¡ The Chanel classic quilted handbag is true Parisian chic, it just
oozes class and sophistication and no matter what the current trends are,
has a classic timeless design that has lived through many a fashion era.
There's something about that soft stitched leather and gold metal chain
that has created a signature style icon for women all over the world.

So let's go back in time to when it first began¡

In 1955, Chanel introduced the Classic Quilted bag with the shoulder strap,
THE bag that shook the fashion world. It became so popular the first year
she had to decline numerous requests due to the lack of time to
painstakingly manufacture each one by her skilled artisans. The bag is
known in industry shorthand as the 2.55, after the month and year it was
introduced.

Chanel's signature quilted fabric has a "secret" quilting pattern sewn at the
back to keep the material strong. This material is used for clothing and
accessories alike.

Throughout the key fashion decades, the Chanel 2.55 handbag
miraculously hasn't changed much. Unlike other fashion design houses who
have altered their bag styles to appeal to the temporary whimsical
demands of fashion trends, the Classic Chanel 2.55 has stood it's ground.
In fact, in 2005, the fashion house celebrated by re-releasing the classic
just as it was.

The classic Chanel bag will never die. The latest versions out this year of
this classic bag are awe striking in lambskin and ostrich leather.

Can you believe that this bag is over 50 years old?

The Secret of Perfect Fitting and Custom Made Clothes

Fashion can refer to the style or custom of dress that prevails at a given time. It can also refer to the garment that that is in style or the making of it. So, you can fashion your fashions in the fashion of the current trends. Well, you get the idea.

There are many variations in fashion around the world. Often, these variations are determined by the culture of the different regions. Variations can be very distinct, such as the Japanese kimono or the sari in India. Others are not quite as distinct. It is harder to distinguish the difference between British fashion and French fashion.

Other things influence the variations in fashion as well, such as age, occupation, social class and generation. The fashions worn by a young person might look less than appealing when worn by an older person, etc. But there are many crossovers. Often, it is the way different items of clothing are combined or accessorized that makes the 'fashion statement' unique to a particular group.

Fashion is in a continual state of flux. The changes can occur from year to year or even within a year. The nature of fashion is also very cyclical. What was in fashion ten or twenty years ago, is now or will be in fashion again. An example of this is hip-hugger jeans. They were in fashion in the late 60s and early 70s and have now come back into fashion.

The socioeconomic and/or politic framework that exists in a particular region often influences current fashions. 'Mao suits' were the result of the move to enforce uniformity in mainland China. Designers around the world picked up on this and created variations to fit into their cultural arenas.

Not matter what the styles are, everyone would like to dress in the current fashions or, at least, close to them. But it can often be too expensive for many women. There is a way to dress very fashionably and maybe even start a new trend or two yourself. Make your own fashions!

Even if you have never sewn a stitch before, you can learn to put together some great fashions. Start with a basic, easy pattern and make it similar to designer fashions by adding embellishments. As you become more proficient, you can use more complicated patterns or even make your own patterns based on designer fashions. A big advantage to making your own fashions is that you can make them uniquely yours.

There are so many benefits in making your own clothes. You can choose the colors, prints, patterns and textures for fabrics that you prefer. And, as I stated before, you can make your clothes uniquely yours with one-of-a-kind fashions. Each garment will be custom made just for you and made so that the fit is perfect.

No more wearing clothes that come close, but not quite, to fitting right. Best of all, you can save money making your own clothes. For about the same cost as buying one designer outfit, you can easily make two or more outfits.

Making your own clothes will give you so much satisfaction, not to mention making you the envy of your circle of friends.

The Advantage of Buying and Wearing Fashion Jewelry

The times are really getting harder and harsher. Because there is a pending and apparent economic crunch anywhere in the world, it is easy to realize that the number of robbers and thieves is really rising. But because there is a constant need to be fashionable, there is a need to wear jewelry, especially for the fashionably conscious people. But how secure and safe could you be when you decide to wear jewelries during important occasions? Do not fret. There surely is a fashion jewelry that would suit your taste.

What is fashion jewelry? Those who are not familiar with the word would readily assume that fashion jewelry is a piece of fashionable jewelry. Yes, it is true. Fashion jewelry entails fashion and beauty. But more than that, fashion jewelry is a piece of accessory that has less actual valuation that it really looks like. In other words, the words may be harsh, fashion jewelries are fake jewelries.

When you say fake, that means the materials by which every fashion jewelry is made up is fake or is not really expensive. For example, a gold necklace would not really be a gold necklace if it is a fashion jewelry. In such case, the gold in the necklace is not really gold but a material that is tarnished or colored to make it appear like it is actually and genuinely gold.

Buying fashion jewelry

There is a market for fashion jewelry. That is because as long as there are budget conscious people, as long as there are wise and fashionable consumers, there would always be buyers of fake jewelries. As long as there are fashionable and extravagant people who could not really afford expensive and premium priced jewelries, there would always be demand for fashion jewelry.

If you are aiming to buy a set of jewelries to suit you get up for an important occasion, why not consider buying fashion jewelry? Nowadays, people would not really care if somebody is wearing fashion jewelry. As long as the wearer could carry the items in fashion and he or she looks good and elegant on them, there would be no questions asked.

Buying fashion jewelry is also made easier nowadays. To make a purchase, all you have to do is to go the nearest and reliable jewelry store. You could easily spot a section of displays for fashion jewelry. Notice that modern fashion jewelries are exquisitely beautiful and gorgeous.

Online purchases of fashion jewelry is also made more feasible and convenient. To do so, all you have to do is to log on to the Website of an online jewelry store or online auctioneer or shopping store. Find and look for fashion jewelry brochures and presto, choose the design and styles you want. Consider the overall get up and design of the clothes you would wear before finally ordering and buying the appropriate fashion jewelry for you.

The advantage of wearing fashion jewelry

The first and primary advantage of wearing fashion jewelry is its relative low cost. Yes, because fashion jewelries are fake jewelries, it is expected and logical that the tag prices are not as significant and as expensive as the premium and genuine expensive jewelries. For example a gold fashion jewelry would naturally cost significantly cheaper than the actual market cost for real gold jewelry.

However, despite the big difference in pricing, it would be amazing that fashion jewelries are still looking as elegant, as gorgeous and as breath-taking as any other expensive jewelries in the market today. The dangling appeal and the fancy reception of bystanders and admirers to fashion jewelry is at the same magnitude as the adoration provided and paid to real and genuine expensive jewelries.

Another advantage of wearing fashion jewelry is that you would have a sense of safety and security. If ever you would be robbed while wearing the jewelry, you could be sure that you are not standing to lose a significant amount of money or asset. Fashion jewelries are cheap so you could easily buy hundreds of them anytime you desire. And you could easily dispose them if they already not usable.

Burglars and thieves certainly would not like it if people would heavily patronize fashion jewelry. That means that the robbers’ efforts to steal and forcefully take a precious jewelry would be futile if they would be robbing fashion jewelry.

Where to Find Hot Fashion Trends

Where to Find Hot Fashion Trends

The fashion world is highly fickle. There is an extremely fine line between wearing clothing that is so trendy that it will be out of style in a week and finding a nice, modern look that will be around for at least a few years or so. While the world of mens fashion does indeed change little by little, it is nowhere near as erratic as the world of womens fashion. In fact, if a girl is to stay on top of the fashion world week after week, she may end up spending thousands of dollars in clothes each and every month. So, no matter if you are a guy or a girl, in order to stay on top of the hottest movements without allowing your clothing to look dated or too trendy, you will want to consult every resource you possibly can to figure out what will look best on you. Currently, the best resources out there appear in three branches of media the Internet, the television and printed books and magazines.

If you do not want to end up like one of the bad dressers on a show like What Not to Wear, then you will want to make sure that you constantly keep up with the current fashion . The Internet will provide you with a valuable tool to keep you up to date with the latest fashion trends by showing you hot looks that are for sale in department stores around the country as well as hundreds of pictures of models and movie stars with their daily wardrobes. From these resources for fashion trends, you can easily make up your own mind about what you think you would look good in and what will obviously be out of style in the coming months.

Television functions much like the internet when it comes to fashion trends. Unless you live in Los Angeles or New York, chances are that you are completely out of the loop when it comes to the most stylish fashion trends. Year after year, LA and NY set many of the most interesting fashion trends thanks to the celebrities, designers and generally wealthy people that live in these cities. Whenever you turn your television to a show that takes place in one of these hip cities, you can easily check out what the stars are wearing.

Finally, you can use print media to determine which fashion trends are right for you. Celebrity magazines, fashion magazines and even catalogues from clothing stores are all valuable if you are looking for the freshest fashion trends on the market. However, magazines have a tendency to focus on clothing that is out of most peoples price range, so be sure to take a magazines recommendation on fashion trends with a grain of salt.

Who Are You? What Back-to-School Fashion Choices Say

We use various ways to express ourselves. We either use words or we use other symbols. We make use of signals, we make use of gestures and we also make use of fashion to tell the world what we want to say. When we put on our clothes for the day, it is like we are declaring to the world our attitude for the day. This is the reason why it is so interesting to observe the back-to-school fashion preferences of people. The back to school fashion preference of a person shows who he will be for the whole term in a nutshell.

There are those people who wear practically the same thing they did in the last term. The bad thing about this is that this could be an indication of little to no personal growth in the past term. This could be an indication that the person did not mature in the past year. What could make this worse is if that person had been wearing the same fashion for more than 5 years. That could be an indicator of a serious problem.

The positive interpretation of this could be that the person has matured enough to have found his or her identity in life. This type of back-to-school fashion could indicate that a person is already perfectly happy with the image that he or she presents and that they feel no urge to change. It could also be an indication that the person has had a great past year and wishes to recapture that year.

There are people who exhibit great changes in their back to school fashion. There is also a good side and a bad side to this. The good interpretation of this is that the person has experienced an epiphany. A change in back-to-school fashion could be an indicator that a person has reached a new level of maturity and is ready to face the world with a new attitude. He or she could be declaring to the world that he or she is a new person, changed for the better and willing to tackle the world head on.

There is also a dark side to this change in back-to-school fashion. A person could have suffered from an event so cataclysmic that it required the person to reject his or her old personality entirely. A drastic change in back-to-school fashion could be akin to a person screaming, "I am not who I used to be. It will not happen to me anymore!". Not all changes are 100% good or 100% bad, though - life is rarely that simple!

There are students whose back to school fashion is based on what a certain group is wearing. The positive side to this is that it indicates social acceptance. A person who has this type of back to school fashion shows that he or she is sociable and knows how to make friends with at least a certain group of people. However, this could also be an indication of a lack of initiative. People who dress the way others do may do so because they don't really have any idea of what to wear. They let their groups decide their fashion because without the group, they really have no idea who they are.

So you can see that back to school fashion is a great indicator of who a person is (or thinks they are!)

How Fashion Marketing School Can Get You a Career in Fashion

There are many Fashion Marketing Schools throughout the world, of varying standards and reputations.

Fashion designers create the latest styles which appear on the catwalks and in shops and finally are available for purchase. All this is done with fashion marketing.

Fashion marketing students can learn from professionals about the hows and whys of the fashion industry and various fashion cycles. They can participate in field trips, undertake projects and learn everything about trends and fashions in internships.

There are many things to learn if you are interested in working in the fashion industry. It is not simply a case of what is in fashion and what is not. You will need to learn about business management, advertising strategies, marketing techniques, merchandising and display, retail management and fashion coordination - basically, everything to do with the industry.

Fashion marketing school is not an easy option but if you live and breathe fashion, it could well be perfect for you. Not everyone would do well at a fashion marketing school. Are you fascinated by fashion? Do you have good fashion sense and a sense of style? Do you know what is in style right now? Do you want to use your fashion sense to follow a rewarding career in the fashion industry?

If you have a degree in Fashion Marketing, you can choose which career you want. Some of the choices are a fashion coordinator, fashion buyer, store or boutique manager or owner, a visual merchandiser or a retail merchandiser.

There is always the possibility of becoming a top designer one day too but you must never think that working in the fashion industry is easy. It requires a lot of natural creative skill, business aptitude and plenty of hard work.

Fashion marketing is about combining advertising, design, business administration and an understanding of how the fashion world functions and what is going to be fashionable in the future based on current fashions and pop culture. If you are a fashion marketer, you will bring the ideas from the designers down the potential buyers, from behind the scenes.

If this sounds like the type of career you would be passionate about, it is vital to select a good fashion marketing school which offers the right kind of program for you and a great training schedule. You will need to attain good exam results to apply for a place in most respected fashion marketing schools. You can apply by mail or even online for places.

Fashion marketing students can specialize in fashion textiles, accessories, footwear markets and more, once they have studied the fashion marketing basics and covered all the groundwork necessary for a career in fashion.

If you are thinking about a career in fashion marketing, it could be a great step but you have to be a hundred percent sure that you have the necessary ambition, drive and aptitude to follow it through. A half-hearted approach will get you left behind.

Fashion Week, Day 2: The Thing About 'Wearable'

Monday, September 20, 2010

Here's the thing about clothes that are wearable: we all moan about designers showing more wearable fashion, then when they do, we complain how boring it all looks. It's the modern woman's fashion conundrum.

After seasons of extremes (microminis or maxis)  and impossibly skinny bottoms, designers are turning out dresses in knee (or longer) lengths that more women can wear to the office and after hours. And instead of ridiculous neon colors, designers have turned to soft neutrals and non-offensive beiges. Weird asymmetrical 3D effects, bold ruffles and obvious retro reworkings? Gone, gone, gone.

So we should be happy when so much that comes down the runway looks like it could easily slip right into our closets, right? Yes and no. Yes, we should be happy that so many pieces -- the softly draped dresses at Costello Tagliapietra (pictured, left), the gorgeous blouses at Jason Wu, the easy shifts at BCBG -- are understandable for so many of us. But then again, wearable pieces sometimes lack the excitement and raw emotion of extreme fashion. When there aren't designers out there pushing the boundaries of what we consider pretty or questioning current silhouettes, lengths and fabrics, it all makes for a pretty boring season.  And bored consumers usually opt to just make do with what they have in their closets rather than run out to buy the latest looks. Clothing fashions

For detailed historical articles by period, see History of Western fashion
The continually changing fashions of the West have been generally unparalleled either in antiquity or in the other great civilizations of the world until recent decades. Early Western travellers, whether to Persia, Turkey or China frequently remark on the absence of changes in fashion there, and observers from these other cultures comment on the unseemly pace of Western fashion, which many felt suggested an instability and lack of order in Western culture. The Japanese Shogun's secretary boasted (not completely accurately) to a Spanish visitor in 1609 that Japanese clothing had not changed in over a thousand years.[2] However in Ming China, for example, there is considerable evidence for rapidly changing fashions in Chinese clothing.[3]
Changes in costume often took place at times of economic or social change (such as in ancient Rome and the medieval Caliphate), but then a long period without major changes followed. This occurred in Moorish Spain from the 8th century, when the famous musician Ziryab introduced sophisticated clothing styles based on seasonal and daily timings from his native Baghdad and his own inspiration to Córdoba, Spain.[4][5] Similar changes in fashion occurred in the Middle East from the 11th century, following the arrival of the Turks who introduced clothing styles from Central Asia and the Far East.[6]
The beginnings of the habit in Europe of continual and increasingly rapid change in clothing styles can be fairly reliably dated to the middle of the 14th century, to which historians including James Laver and Fernand Braudel date the start of Western fashion in clothing.[7][8] The most dramatic manifestation was a sudden drastic shortening and tightening of the male over-garment, from calf-length to barely covering the buttocks, sometimes accompanied with stuffing on the chest to look bigger. This created the distinctive Western male outline of a tailored top worn over leggings or trousers.
Marie Antoinette was a fashion icon
The pace of change accelerated considerably in the following century, and women and men's fashion, especially in the dressing and adorning of the hair, became equally complex and changing. Art historians are therefore able to use fashion in dating images with increasing confidence and precision, often within five years in the case of 15th century images. Initially changes in fashion led to a fragmentation of what had previously been very similar styles of dressing across the upper classes of Europe, and the development of distinctive national styles. These remained very different until a counter-movement in the 17th to 18th centuries imposed similar styles once again, mostly originating from Ancien Régime France.[9] Though the rich usually led fashion, the increasing affluence of early modern Europe led to the bourgeoisie and even peasants following trends at a distance sometimes uncomfortably close for the elites - a factor Braudel regards as one of the main motors of changing fashion.[10]
Albrecht Dürer's drawing contrasts a well turned out bourgeoise from Nuremberg (left) with her counterpart from Venice. The Venetian lady's high chopines make her taller
Ten 16th century portraits of German or Italian gentlemen may show ten entirely different hats, and at this period national differences were at their most pronounced, as Albrecht Dürer recorded in his actual or composite contrast of Nuremberg and Venetian fashions at the close of the 15th century (illustration, right). The "Spanish style" of the end of the century began the move back to synchronicity among upper-class Europeans, and after a struggle in the mid 17th century, French styles decisively took over leadership, a process completed in the 18th century.[11]
Though colors and patterns of textiles changed from year to year,[12] the cut of a gentleman's coat and the length of his waistcoat, or the pattern to which a lady's dress was cut changed more slowly. Men's fashions largely derived from military models, and changes in a European male silhouette are galvanized in theatres of European war, where gentleman officers had opportunities to make notes of foreign styles: an example is the "Steinkirk" cravat or necktie.
The pace of change picked up in the 1780s with the increased publication of French engravings that showed the latest Paris styles; though there had been distribution of dressed dolls from France as patterns since the 16th century, and Abraham Bosse had produced engravings of fashion from the 1620s. By 1800, all Western Europeans were dressing alike (or thought they were): local variation became first a sign of provincial culture, and then a badge of the conservative peasant.[13]
Although tailors and dressmakers were no doubt responsible for many innovations before, and the textile industry certainly led many trends, the history of fashion design is normally taken to date from 1858, when the English-born Charles Frederick Worth opened the first true haute couture house in Paris. Since then the professional designer has become a progressively more dominant figure, despite the origins of many fashions in street fashion. The four major current fashion capitals are acknowledged to be Milan, New York City, Paris, and London. Fashion weeks are held in these cities, where designers exhibit their new clothing collections to audiences, and which are all headquarters to the greatest fashion companies and are renowned for their major influence on global fashion.
Modern Westerners have a wide choice available in the selection of their clothes. What a person chooses to wear can reflect that person's personality or likes. When people who have cultural status start to wear new or different clothes a fashion trend may start. People who like or respect them may start to wear clothes of a similar style.
Fashions may vary considerably within a society according to age, social class, generation, occupation, and geography as well as over time. If, for example, an older person dresses according to the fashion of young people, he or she may look ridiculous in the eyes of both young and older people. The terms 'fashionista' or fashion victim refer to someone who slavishly follows the current fashions.
One can regard the system of sporting various fashions as a fashion language incorporating various fashion statements using a grammar of fashion. (Compare some of the work of Roland Barthes.)

The TOP TEN Collections

Friday, September 17, 2010

What will get women back into the stores? Designers came up with a range of answers for Spring, lower price points being one of the most compelling. But this wasn't a season of "safe clothes." There was less talk of "brand DNA," and the best collections had a tangible sense of adventure. Representing some intriguing opposites (utility chic and 24-hour cocktail dressing, the city and the country, sport and lingerie dressing), here are Style.com's favorites.
  1. 1. Balenciaga
Saying au revoir to the eighties, Nicolas Ghesquière went back to the future and the streets, arming his tribe of urban warriors with hooded vests, sporty skirts, and the sexiest leather jeans around—all spliced together in ways that defy both the imagination and the copy artists.
  2. 2. Balmain
Christophe Decarnin found a way to put a new gloss on the tight, tattered, T&A formula he's made his own—mixing tailcoats, army surplus shirts, and leather cargo pants with chain-mail minidresses and sequined loincloths. The look is so hot, it's probably illegal in several states

  3. 3. Celine
Good news for women looking for practical yet utterly polished clothes: Phoebe Philo's back. Leather tees, high-waisted trousers, and a sophisticated new take on leotard dressing are the keys to her contemporary—and in a way, daring—brand of minimalism.

  4. 4. Chanel
Lily Allen sang with her band, but forget the theatrics. Karl Lagerfeld, at his playful best, took Chanel rustique. In the imaginative mix: nubby tweed suits (this time with thigh-split skirts), frothy chiffon party frocks worthy of Marie Antoinette, and, yes, clogs.

  5. 5. Givenchy
Riccardo Tisci nailed it for Spring, marrying the gothic, rocker sensibility that has made fans of Madonna, Rihanna, et al. with real-world chic in the form of graphic black and white suitings, draped toga dresses, and striking tribal prints.

  6. 6. Lanvin
Never mind the recession. Alber Elbaz refused to play it safe: He laid on the chunky jewelry, loaded his dresses and jumpsuits with a souk's worth of gold beads, displayed his mastery of color, and even did clever things with polyester. Fashion lovers the world over will find a way to get their hands on these confections.

  7. 7. Marc Jacobs
Ruffles by the mile, lamé, sheer leggings, Kabuki makeup, fanny packs—they were all in the zany mix at Marc Jacobs. And the season's unmissable underwear-as-outerwear trend? As usual, you saw it here first.

  8. 8. Proenza Schouler
They've oft claimed to design for the bright young things they call their friends, but this time Lazaro Hernandez and Jack McCollough really delivered. Their surf- and skate-influenced abbreviated animal-print dresses are destined for heavy rotation on the party circuit.

  9. 9. Rodarte
Kate and Laura Mulleavy spun a tale about a woman-turned-condor into the stuff of fashion fantasy: one-of-a-kind dresses and gowns patchworked together from ravaged bits of leather, cheesecloth, plaid, and cobwebby knits. It made for apocalyptic magic on the runway.

  10. 10. Versace
This is the season of the cocktail dress, which means it's Donatella Versace's moment to shine. And shine she did with chain mail, cutouts, eye-popping prints, and even a plastic miniskirt or two. It was vintage Gianni, but with a twenty-first-century woman's eye for cut, proportion, and fit.

Another Don Hill's Party

Have you ever wondered what it would feel like to be a piece of chicken cooking inside a George Foreman grill? You would have found out, if you attended last night's Dazed & Confused party at Don Hill's. Hot, hemmed in from every side, suddenly flipped around by forces beyond your control or comprehension. To say the joint was packed would be the understatement of the century.

Dazed editor Jefferson Hack undoubtedly knew he was in for a fire-hazard crowd from the moment Yeah Yeah Yeahs agreed to play. As usual this week at Don Hill's, the gig was secret; as usual, the word got out.

Earlier that evening, at Hack's Another Magazine dinner, the vibe was considerably mellower. Lily Donaldson, André Balazs, Adam Kimmel, Leelee Sobieski, and Daphne Guinness were just a few of the notables who made it up to the party at the Milk Studios penthouse, which interior designer Ryan Korban had kitted out in his signature Italian-seventies-meets-French-forties style.

"The idea was basically, let's make the penthouse feel like someone's incredible apartment, and entertain the way you would at home," Korban explained. And sure enough, Jen Brill and Terence Koh could be found lingering over small plates at a dinner table, while Maggie Gyllenhaal and Peter Sarsgaard lounged on sofas nearby, and Serge Azria, who co-hosted the Dazed fête with Nur Khan and Hack, was out mingling on the patio with the smokers. Very civilized. Chicken was served.

Givenchy

Givenchy Fall 2010 CoutureThe history of haute couture is studded with magnificent obsessives like Cristobal Balenciaga and Charles James. Even if Riccardo Tisci's name never makes it onto that list, his latest Couture collection for Givenchy proved that he shares the grandmasters' fanatical devotion to realizing an intensely personal vision through cut, cloth, and, in Tisci's case, extraordinarily elaborate ornamentation. This season, he opted out of a proper show in favor of intimate presentations, where he could better highlight detailed pieces like the painstakingly patchworked leather coat or the dress in Chantilly lace where the pattern of the lace had been duplicated in appliquéd leather (the dress ended in a cascade of dégradé ostrich feathers—Tisci considers dégradé, lace, and fringe-work his signatures).

The darkest color in the collection was the chocolate brown on those feathers. Otherwise, everything was white, flesh-colored, or gold, with a salon dedicated to each shade. Even the baboon fur that was attached to a swallowtailed knit jacket was spookily bleached. Fact is, Tisci didn't need black to exercise his gothic inclinations. He claimed his inspiration was Frida Kahlo and her three obsessions: religion, sensuality, and, given the painter's lifelong battle with spinal pain, the human anatomy. The zipper pulls were little bones, a belt was a spinal column re-created in porcelain. The dominant motif of the collection was the skeleton, laid out flat in the lace appliquéd on a long tulle column, or rendered in three dimensions in obsessively dense clusters of crystals, pearls, and lace on the back of a jacket in double silk duchesse satin. Nestled in the middle? A tiny ceramic skull sprouting angel wings. At one point during his presentation, Tisci rather tellingly muttered, "A romantic way to see death."

That jacket was suspended in the all-white "ceramic" room. In the "skin" room, Tisci showcased lace catsuits, one decorated with a Swarovski crystal skeleton that took 1,600 hours to create. In the third, "gold" room was a lace dress that demanded six months of work. Dresses encrusted with gold paillettes, stones, and beads were almost too heavy to lift, despite being revealingly scissored away at the waist. If the detail was breathtaking, it was also quite numbing in its intensity. The last room featured a giant portrait by Willy Vanderperre of Tisci's muses wearing the dresses, seen from the back. "I love that view," Tisci explained, "the spine of people." Walk round the photo and there was the same view from the front, the women all posed reverentially like hand maidens. In obsession is born the cult of couture

Givenchy

Indisputably, Riccardo Tisci has moved up to the elite group of designers who matter most in Paris. His work has editors pining to buy and rock stars' stylists competing for first dibs—and for Spring, that heat's only going to intensify. What he sent out was a fusion of Arabic influences, goddesslike draping, and, according to the program notes, the results of his new research into sixties Roman couture. If that sounds like nonsense on paper, in fact almost every garment had an intensity of proportion and detail that looked incredible: the graphic jackets; tiny kilts; attenuated drop-crotch harem pants; cool, multilayered, modernized tutus; and draped, wrapped, and swathed tulle dresses.

Travel influences often lead to banality, but Tisci's referencing of the kaffiyeh scarf was pushed into allover digital patterns in ways that almost took it into the realm of zigzagging psychedelia. The prints covered blouses, jackets, kilts, leggings, platform wedges, and bags. The silhouette, with its slightly raised waistline, had the effect of making the models look even taller and more impossibly leggy—the drama enhanced by the high, wrapped, wedge-heel boots. For day, the bondage-y footwear came in leather; at night, with the goddess dresses, it was smothered in white tulle.

This highly resolved series of looks could only have come about because of Tisci's experience in Givenchy's haute couture. If that sounds high-flown, it is, in a way—but the cleverness is that everything he's doing now has the heartbeat of youth. Even better: Tisci may be the rock world's new dream couturier, but in retail that also translates into accessible, surprising pieces that sell out the minute they hit stores.
